Residential Interior Design Tips

Choosing the right style or theme for your home can be a daunting task. It is so easy to get it wrong and overdo the theme so your living area ends up looking like a 1980's show-room reject.

Choosing the right style or theme for your home can be a daunting task. It is so easy to get it wrong and overdo the theme so your living area ends up looking like a 1980's show-room reject. Or even worse, end up with home accessories that just don't work together, or stand out like a sore thumb.

So, where to start? If you are starting from scratch and doing a total renovation then you might as well seek professional advice, but be aware that professionals can also get it wrong. Do your research so that when you speak to someone you have an idea of what styles you like and don't like, thus avoiding being snowballed into something you are unsure about. You can find lots of examples of residential interior design just by searching online, and you should also be able to find a good range of magazines on this popular topic.

If you just want to update your existing interior, try small changes first. Try some home accessories like a couple of throw rugs in contrasting colors, new lampshades or even tall side lamps instead of using the overhead lights. Lighting can make a vast difference. Of course, your own personal taste should rule your decisions but it isn't a bad idea to avoid going with current trends which might date very quickly. Instead, go for classic colors and styles that reflect comfort and an inviting atmosphere. Once you have settled on accessories and furniture that work, you can start thinking about the bigger projects like painting a feature wall!
