Interior Designing – How important is color?

Interior Designing is an art by itself and requires one to be creative and imaginative. Though most of us are designers in some or the other way, there are simple laws of nature while designing any space or contour that can comfortably and inexpensively make our living space much more beautiful, calming and soothing.

Of all tips in decorating a living space, color plays a pivotal role. Color can create a significant change in feelings, emotions and perceptions of the people that reside at that place. Different color combinations invoke different feelings and memories. It is therefore very important to know which color invokes which type of feelings and then decide on a color. Most of the shades that are used are generally white, yellow, cream, orange, green, red, blue, and sometimes black.

Each color has its own significance. White and black are the extremes and so invoke completely different emotions. White though most commonly used can sometimes be uninspiring but it is the generally accepted color for the ceilings. White color to a ceiling gives an illusion of more space and when painted on the walls, makes the rooms look brighter. Black on the other hand is the least commonly used as it is known to invoke aggressive and negative emotions. However, patches of black against white gives a very broad and contrasting effect to a structure sometimes creating positive energy.

The earth tones such as oranges, browns and yellows are very commonly used but each color exhibits a different emotion on different individuals. Orange color is a sign of entertainment and happiness, while yellow is known to create positive energy and optimistic attitude. Brown on the other hand invites a relationship attitude with one's family.

Natural colors such as green and blue are very good for bedrooms. They bring the emotions of peace and serenity and can work wonders to keep the mind calm and restful.

Pink is one of the color choices mostly associated with teenage girls and indicates vibrance and playful attitude. On the other hand, red color on the walls generates an emotion of aggression and defiance. However, it is one of the favorite colors for sheets, pullovers and covers.

A good designer combines all these colors to create all positive emotions and suppress negativity and defiance. A small change in contrast and hue can create a big change in the lookout of the whole structure rendering it more livable and soothing.
